Jetty Number 3

I was always worried then

Worried and lonely

I sought your company eagerly

Walked mile after mile in the dark,

Spent several years of my life

Waiting for you.

Do you remember our bungalow

On Jetty Number 3 in Chittagong

The field across it

The mango and neem trees

And the lemon grove

Oh how I walked from the mango tree

To the neem and back again

Oh how I tried to while away

Those anxious hours of waiting.

They were long and painful days

As the evening advanced

My pain grew

And a nameless fear gripped my heart

The night wind caressed

My wet cheeks

And yet even then

As I stood alone in the dark

I wondered

Where you went every night

Why you were so late

Getting back home

Why you left me alone

For such long hours

Oh how miserable I felt.
